Why does man desire God? Compendium of the CCC

Why does man desire God?

CCC 27-30, 44-45 Why does man have a desire for God?

God himself, in creating man in his own image, has written upon his heart the desire to see him.

Even if this desire is often ignored, God never ceases to draw man to himself

because only in God will he find and live the fullness of truth and happiness for which he never stops searching.

By nature and by vocation, therefore, man is a religious being, capable of entering into communion with God.

This intimate and vital bond with God confers on man his fundamental dignity.

People may have the the tendency to hide, but in the depth of their heart, they desire God.

It is not easy to explain or to understand why you and I desire God. Nevertheless, it is the truth.

Why do we really desire God?

The answer given by the Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church is this:

God himself, in creating man in his own image, has written upon his heart the desire to see him.

It is God Himself who has planted that desire in every man’s heart.

To name such desire, it is the desire to see God working in one’s life.

It is the desire to feel the closeness, the real presence, of God.

It is the desire to be secured with the fact that in every situation, somebody got his or her back.

And that somebody is Someone who has a Higher Power – higher than the power of all human persons combined.

Because with human, there is always a limitation, an impossibility, an uncertainty, but with God there is no limits, no impossibility, but only a guaranteed truth as long as one believes.

Even if this desire is often ignored, God never ceases to draw man to himself…

People can deny that they desire God, that they long for Him.

But God will never run away. In fact, He will even come closer until there is no more way to ignore Him.

It is true that God often allow pain, sickness, heartbreak or loss, but He Himself does not like it. He only allow it that people may recognize His ever lasting presence.

…because only in God will he find and live the fullness of truth and happiness for which he never stops searching.

God knows what man needs and that it is Him who is his Source. Therefore, He would not a single second leave man alone. God would let man find Him in one way or another. It is not that God is hiding somewhere that He cannot be found, but it is that man keeps on looking for other gods that the real God becomes difficult to recognize.

When man has found God, he has found truth and happiness in its fullness, for no other sort of creature can give these but God alone. “My heart is restless, until it rests in God” says St. Augustine. He describes the deepest longing of man which is often only realized when one finally finds its rest in God.

By nature and by vocation, therefore, man is a religious being, capable of entering into communion with God.

The nature of man is towards God, because he is created by God’s own hands. Any creature tends to go back to its Source.

The vocation of man is to find God, to live with God and to bring God everywhere. That is why, the deepest meaning of one’s life is attained when one has fulfilled his call or vocation.

Man’s nature and vocation keep him close to God. Together with these is the grace that God Himself bestows.

And this grace is what makes it possible for man to constantly connect with God and enter into a relationship with Him.

This intimate and vital bond with God confers on man his fundamental dignity.

What urges man to keep coming back to God is the intimate and vital bond that he has with God.

Without this, man has no dignity, man is not precious and special; man is not worth saving at all!

But because God loved man so deeply in His heart from the beginning, therefore, man has worth. The love of God makes up every fiber of human being.

Man to God is a treasure of greatest price.

God will do everything not to lose His precious one.

Points for Reflection:

1. When do you feel you desire God the most? Why?

2. Do you realize your worth as God’s precious one? How do you take good care of this dignity that you have?

3. In your own experience, what does God do to call you back and find you again and again when you are lost?

Why does man have a desire for God?
