What happened on each day of the Holy Week?

We have been observing the Holy Week year after year, but maybe are still asking,Holy week

“What really happened on each day of the Holy Week?”

Here is a summary of what happened during that first Holy Week  from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday.

Palm Sunday

  •  Jesus arrived in Jerusalem and was welcomed by the Jews with jubilation. With palms in their hands, the Jewish people paid Jesus homage.
  • During the night, Jesus left Jerusalem and went to Bethany

Holy Monday

  • Jesus left Bethany and headed back to Jerusalem (Matthew 21:17 or Mark 11:11)
  • On the road, He passed by a fig tree and cursed it for it had no fruit (Mark 11:12-14)
  • Jesus spent time in the temple, drives away money changers in anger for desecrating the house of God (Mark 11:15-17)

Holy Tuesday

  • Jesus and his disciples saw that the fig tree that Jesus cursed withered
  • In the temple, Jesus’ authority was questioned by the chief priests and scribes (Mark 11: 27-33)

Holy Wednesday

  • Jesus was at the house of Simon the Leper and a woman anointed His head with a very costly perfume. Judas and the others were not happy about it (Mk:14-3-9)
  • Judas met with the chief priests and agreed to betray Jesus to them  (Mt. 26:14-16; Mk. 14:10-11)

Holy Thursday or Maundy Thursday 

  • Jesus returned to Jerusalem and gave his disciples instructions on preparing the upper room for the Passover (Mt.26:17-19)
  • Jesus had the last supper with His apostles
  • On the same night, Jesus washed the feet of His disciples to summon them to serve one another as He has served and loved them to his last breath
  • After the supper, Jesus and his disciples went to the Mount of Olives
  • At Mount Olives, Jesus told His apostles the events that will be happening in the following days, how He would suffer and die, although many of them did not really understand
  • Jesus’ agony in the Garden of Gethsemane

Good Friday

  • Judas betrayed Jesus with a kiss
  • Jesus was arrested and persecuted.
  • Peter denied Jesus three times
  • Jesus’ was tried in the Roman courts before Pontius Pilate and Herod Antipas
  • Jesus was sentenced to death 
  • Jesus carried the cross to a place of Skull called Golgotha
  • Jesus was crucified and died on the cross at about 3 o’clock in the afternoon
  • Joseph of Arimathea laid Jesus’ body in the tomb.

Black Saturday

  •  Jesus’ body lies in the tomb.
  •  Some women came to anoint Jesus body 

Easter Sunday 

  • Jesus rose again from death and appeared to his disciples (Lk.24:1-8)
